Innsbruck, Austria
Majestic Innsbruck, nestled in the Alps, offers outdoor enthusiasts plenty to participate in, while those interested in culture, have lots to keep them busy. From the moment the train pulls into the station, you are surrounded by breathtaking views of mountains and colourful buildings.

Nordkette
Summer, winter, rain or shine, Innsbruck offers visitors something special. The Winter Olympics have been held here twice, offering amazing skiing and other winter sports. In the middle of summer, snow can still be found at the top of Nordkette and it is well worth the trek. Not in the mood for hiking, no problem, the funicular and gondola will you get you there effortlessly. Stop mid-way to visit the Alpine zoo or head all the way up and have lunch at Seegrube restaurant. Fancy a picnic? They have you covered. Pre-book in advance and head up to Seegrube where they will have your picnic ready for you in a handy backpack.
At the gondola drop off station, you can hike to the very top. At 2300 metres above sea level, the altitude definitely affected my climb but I was so glad we made it. The views were spectacular and we enjoyed our picnic on the provided benches while being watched by the many skittish, hopeful birds.
There are hiking trails at the top but keep your eye on the time so as not to miss the last gondola down the mountain. It’s a long hike down, especially after a day of activity.

City Life

Nestled at the base of the mountains, is beautiful, cobblestoned, historic Altstadt, full of Baroque and Gothic architecture. Being a four season city, you can walk around under the covered promenade and stay dry in the rain. Cafes are plentiful and the covered patios provide a respite from the rain while allowing for one of my favourite pastimes, people watching.
We had a very short stop in Innsbruck with the main purpose of our visit being Nordkette so we didn’t have much time for anything else but we enjoyed walking around Altstadt, wandering through the stores and admiring the architecture.
I would love to come back to the Innsbruck area and see some of the wonderful sights it has to offer. Some of the nearby attractions include:
- Imperial Palace and Gardens
- Swarovski Crystal Worlds
- Ambras Castle, the oldest museum in the world
- Neuschwanstein Castle
- White Water rafting
