GERMANY
Germany, a land full of Cathedrals, Castles and medieval villages. Whatever your interest, you can find it here. Arts, theatre, industry, monarchy, urban cities and rural forests and of course, the horrors of WW II.
Germany is one of the most populated countries in Europe but is very fragmented. The largest city, Berlin, is far from the financial city of Frankfurt. Berlin has it’s own shameful past with the building of and eventual destruction of the Berlin wall that occurred from 1961 to 1989.
While cruising with Emerald Waterways I had the opportunity to visit some of the magnificent cities and towns along the Rhine in Germany. I saw charming castles and stunning cathedrals, none more so than the Cologne cathedral. The 17th and 18th century towns and villages were well-restored to resemble a time long past. Read my blogs to find out more about these charming locations, including the Black Forest, Breisach, Heidelberg, Koblenz, Cochem and Cologne. Each stop held a secret for us to discover.
A more recent trip to Europe found us in Salzburg, Austria, allowing us to cross the German border to visit the historic Eagle’s Nest where Hitler made horrific decisions during WWII.
